Forest in Transition

Metcalf Bottoms, Tennessee
Oil on Canvas 12x16 -

This expressive landscape captures the peaceful charm of Metcalf Bottoms, one of the Smoky Mountains’ most beloved riverside retreats. Sunlight filters gently through a canopy of autumn foliage, where warm oranges, golds, and soft greens create a vibrant tapestry along the riverbanks. The cool, clear water winds calmly through the center of the scene, its surface reflecting hints of sky blue and amber light as it moves around scattered river rocks.

High Tide Retreat
Oil on Canvas 12x36

“High Tide Retreat” captures the calm, unhurried rhythm of the Lowcountry marsh at its most peaceful. Soft blue water winds through golden grasses, reflecting the quiet glow of a warm coastal afternoon. Two elegant white egrets wade gracefully in the shallows, their mirrored reflections adding a sense of balance and serenity to the scene.

I love the sounds of the marsh. While you may not see the wildlife tucked away in the grasses you can  definitely hear the critters among them. A splash, a bird calling, the crabs crawling, the list goes on and on.

This oil painting captures our Fripp backyard. The Island marsh is a serene, atmospheric landscape filled with rich color and soft, luminous light. The scene captures an expansive tidal marsh at sunset, with the sky glowing in radiant hues of gold, pink, lavender, and soft blues. These colors spill beautifully onto the water’s surface, creating shimmering reflections that unify the sky and marsh in a dreamy, almost ethereal palette.

The fisherman is out catching dinner, while the birds are out for a quick snack. I’m fascinated with shrimp boats. Now to the boat name: is it after the one in a famous movie or after one of my favorite aunts?

I discovered a love for painting birds in a 2024 workshop I attended in the low country of South Carolina. I love to name animals as I paint them. I find it helps awakening their personalities. This one  become Edgar. Very distinguished.
